Thinking about liposuction all the time but still can’t make up your mind? Here is all you need to know about liposuction.
Liposuction has become a hot topic to discuss over a past decade. It took lot of time, effort and knowledge from various surgeons to get this procedure into effect. To understand liposuction better let’s first go through its history –
It all began in the 1920s when a French surgeon Charles Dujarier introduced the concept of fat removal and body contouring. However, his first experiment did not turn out to be a success and therefore the concept was lost in the decades following.
Later, when in Rome, Dr Arpad and Giorgio Fischer developed a technique called blunt tunnelling from which modern liposuction evolved.
Coming back to the French, Dr Yves- Gerald Illouz presented the “Illous method”. This was a suction aided method which involved removing fat after using cannulas , injecting fluid into the tissue for breaking up fat deposits which were later removed by a suction device. The results of Illuous method showed high reproducibility and less morbidity.
Following this, Dr Pierre Fournier introduced use of lidocaine (medication used to numb tissue in a specific area) and used various compression techniques after the surgery.Later, American physicians experimented with the procedure and developed various sedation methods eliminating the need of general anesthesia.
End of 1990s was when doctors introduced the use of ultrasound for liquefying fat making it easier to remove it. Such developments have led to improve lipo technique over the time and hence making fat removal an easy process without any pain, blood loss or other complications.
As the word suggests, Lipo (fat) suction (reducing air pressure of an enclosed surface causing two surfaces stick together) is a type of cosmetic surgery which removes fat deposits beneath the skin using a hollow stainless steel tube called cannula with the assistance of powerful vaccum.
The operation is usually carried out under general anesthesia. We shouldn’t confuse ourselves and look at is as a weight loss tool or a treatment for obesity, neither it removes stretch marks, dimples. Liposuction is meant to remove only the mean fat deposits under the skin and the amount of fat which can be removed it also limited.
Liposuction issued to improve appearance rather than providing any health benefits. Body areas commonly targeted for liposuction treatment are chest, abdomen, buttock, back, inner knees, hips, flanks(love handles), inner and outer thigh and upperarms. It works best on people with better skin tone and elasticity where skin moulding is more accurate.
In order to go through a liposuction , a person should be over 18 years of age. It is not recommended for people with low blood circulation and weakened immune system to undergo the procedure.
Liposuction is usually done for cosmetic purposes but it also helps in treating certain health conditions like:
Lymphedema: A chronic, or long-term, condition in which excess fluid known as lymph collects in tissues, causing edema, or swelling. The edema commonly occurs in the arms or legs. Liposuction is sometimes used to reduce swelling, discomfort, and pain.
Gynecomastia: Fat Accumulated under a man’s breasts removed by liposuction.
Lipodystrophy syndrome: Fat accumulated in one part of the body andlost in another. Liposuction improves the patient’s appearance by providing a more natural looking body fat distribution.
Extreme weight loss after obesity: A person with morbid obesity who loses at least 40 percent of their BMI may need treatment to remove excess skin and other abnormalities.
Lipomas: Benign, fatty tumors removed by liposuction.
Types of Liposuction:
Though the basics of liposuction described above remain the same, there are a couple of different techniques that can be used during liposuction. These include:
Tumescent liposuction: The surgeon injects a solution into the fatty areas before the fat is removed. It is made up of a saline solution, a mild painkiller and epinephrine, a drug that contracts the blood vessels. The solution not only helps the surgeon removed the fat more easily but it helps reduce blood loss and provides pain relief during and after surgery.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction. During ultrasound-assisted liposuction, ultrasonic energy is used to liquefy the fat, after which it is removed from the body.
Before the operation:
There are few things which we need to take care of before a liposuction procedure. First and foremost is to find a right doctor; this choice of selection should be based on a doctor’s set of skills, reputation, experience and advice.
Undergoing a medical test to ensure we are fit for the surgery. People using aspirin on a regular basis need to stop consuming it at least two weeks before the surgery. Women may be asked to stop taking contraceptive pills. Patients with anaemia may be asked to take iron supplements.
During the operation:
Depending on the type of liposuction, the procedure can be performed as an outpatient procedure or if the large amounts of fat are being removed, it can require an overnight stay.
Before the procedure begins, anesthesia is given depening on the degree of the fat being removed and the type of liposuction being performed. Surgery is usually done while a person is sleeping.
Once the anaesthesia kicks in, the procedure is performed using a suction device called cannula. Through small incisions, the cannula is inserted into fatty areas between skin and muscle where it removes excess fat either using a suction pump or a large syringe. This results in a smoother, improved body contour. The length of the procedure will vary with the amount of fat needing removal.
Recovery after liposuction:
It generally takes 2-6 days for recovery depending upon the amount of fat removed from the body. Bruising, swelling and numbness is something one can expect after a liposuction surgery. Wearing a compression garment can help as it puts pressure on the healing tissue and tightens the skin. Taking short walks may reduce the risk of blood clots.
It is very important to stay in touch with the doctor after the surgery in order to gain proper guidance and recover better. Staying hydrated and eating proper meals also plays a very important role in the recovery process.
Smoking, Drinking, Heavy Exercise, food with high content of sodium or skipping a follow up appointment with the doctor is strictly not recommended.
Results of liposuction:
Body contour will be apparent when the swelling usually experienced after a liposuction procedure subsides. It is necessary to maintain the weight by exercising and eating healthy in order to expect permanent results.
